This adobe half wall holding hand rail leads into the entry door to the house. This being the old garage prior to the conversion. It will also provide a backdrop to a computer area. We built the wall using the original adobe bricks taken out of the walls when we punched through to the new addition. To complete the wall we then supplemented with other recycled adobe blocks we have in our own personal stash.
Norbert chiseled down the flagstone from those removed when the foundation was excavated. He then fashioned some nice caps to the adobe wall. Carolyn then set about hand tooling the mortar joints and filling in with cob the missing parts to the adobe blocks – some of which had crumbled quite a bit. She then sealed the bricks to remove any dusting which might occur, which would not be great in a area set aside for computer work. She uses a simple sealant combined with clay to help the bricks retain their natural look while given them a hard shell finish, of sorts.
The nice hammered metal hand rail was chosen from online at a small blacksmith store. It compliments the black hardware of the barn door next to it.
