The multiple windows in this sun room will maximize the views and southern solar gain. They also will give good cross ventilation during summer months. The amount of windows in relation to the square footage of the room, exceeded the 20% standard for ideal passive solar design. However, the family was prepared to manage the heat and cold aspects – knowing the formula. They were willing to trade a better view and the brightness of this room for some comfort.
The original home tends to be a bit dark given the porch – with portals wrapping it and blocking the sun. This new bright south facing room is a good option to remedy the dark feel to the main house.
