In this older adobe home renovation in Chimayo, New Mexico, the courtyard was enclosed to create a living room and sun room for plants. The existing posts and saltillo tiles which border the edge walkway leading to the living room were kept in place. We simply filled in the tiles which needed repair due to the demo matching the existing feel of them.
The framed-in posts and beams to the ceiling area were comprised of a variety of types of rough sawn wood. In order to bring about unity to the wood, we stained them all with a teak stain which gave a freshened look to it. We then installed the hard wood flooring, sanding and sealing it with healthy stains with low VOC.
We worked with our friend to choose low VOC paints and new fabrics for the upholstery to provide a contemporary feel to the new, light bright room. The antique chairs and couch with fresh new styles, combined with the color palate, creates an elegant and organic feel. The room leads to the sun room and a row of windows looking south to the view of the mountains, green being an appropriate choice for a bright, alive space.
