Tile transition edge to earthen floor. The image here shows the linseed oiled, completed earthen floor on left. On the right features a dried finished floor which is lighter in tone due to not having it’s oil sealant applied yet. The blue patterned tile was added as a simple decorate touch to incorporate blue tones into the entryway.
To inlay tiles or stone into earthen floors works very well. In most cases, due to the stone, tile and earthen floor blend being “like” materials, there will be no separation when the elements dry. With materials such as concrete and wood, which are considered “unlike” mud or earthen materials (with different drying properties) separation will most likely occur. Therefore if using “unlike” materials is it wise to incorporate an adhesion material or coat of some sort. Any earthen building specialist will be well versed in such matters.
