I-beam roofing members are seen lined up on this good-sized roof with a single pitch. Stepping back a bit in the project sequence, this dramatic shot shows the I-beams in place. For simple roofs with smaller spans and when a cathedral ceiling is not desired, I-beam provide a good solid option, verses trusses.
The goal with creating this simple shed roof with a single pitch, was to keep the design and lines of the house simple. The house overall has a bit of a minimalist bent in terms of interior detailing and look. By creating an open floor plan with minimal interior walls, we were able to keep the costs down and also complete the home in roughly 9 months, from foundation to finish.
Given that this home is completely off grid, water catchment included, it made for some added up front costs. Creating the 18 panel PV solar photo voltaic system and the large rack and battery storage building was one added expense. Also, the catchment tanks and water collection system is a bit elaborate. And finally, the solar hot water system is another large item which had to be planned and executed well. All of these added off grid features added upfront expense to the house, but will virtually eliminate utility costs for the home.
