Saltillo tiles kitchen view – shown here. A view of this open plan kitchen and living area. The new tile floor contrasts the rich tones of the earthen floor.

We’ve replaced the tiles in the kitchen with Mexican saltillo tiles. They are a favorite local style in the Southwest. Mexican tiles are often a challenge due to being handmade. They tend to vary in shape and size, which can be a challenge to install. We have learned how to best work with them. We always caution clients who want pure straight edges and lines – it might be wise to steer clear of Mexican hand made tiles.

These particular tiles come without a sealant on them, so we needed to add two coats to protect not only the tiles, but the fresh grout as well. Even with the challenges of the tiling, we were happy with the end result.
