The tiles around the edges were added for a nice decorative touch to delineate the entry and the living room space.

When the linseed oil coats are applied to waterproof the floor, the the tones will revert back to a darker shade.  This is simply the nature of oiling and earthen floor so should be expected and considered if you are contemplating an earthen floor in your own home. It is rather rare to have the end result of an earthen floor which has been sealed to end up a very light shade.
